Perfect Hostess Gifts

Have you ever showed up to a barbecue and everyone had a bottle of Merlot? It’s time to break through and get creative with hostess gifts. The best gift boils down to a few things: how well do you know the person, what’s your budget, and do you expect them to use it when you’re there.

If you know the host or hostess well, consider a gift that reminds them of time you spent together. For example, if you both enjoy the fusion metal jazz, a great gift could be a DVD, CD, or tickets to an event. However, if you don’t know this person well, you may be tempted for flowers or a gift basket from the local market. Hang tough. You can find a unique and inspired gift even if you don’t know them well.

Still, use a bit of caution since you want to avoid anything that could potentially offend the host or hostess. For example, you wouldn’t want to give a tray of sausage and cheese to a vegan.

Remember that you don’t need to bust your budget to give something elaborate. Not only will doing this embarrass the hostess, it makes you appear desperate for acceptance. Stay within your budget, knowing that they will appreciate anything you give.

Asking you to bring a dish to share is not the hostess gift necessarily. And never expect the gift to be used during the party.

So, here are some cool ideas from Martha Stewart:

  1. Create custom coasters
  2. Tapered candles instead of the usual scented ones
  3. Grilling planks
  4. Gift basked with items from your garden like tomatoes along with things like garlic and pasta or buffalo mozzarella and basil with a good bottle of olive oil
  5. Scented sugars

And from The Kitchn:

  1. Dome terrarium (Many malls have kiosks selling terrariums now)
  2. Finishing Sea Salts
  3. A nice apron
  4. Tea Towels

From Real Simple:

  1. Handmade needlepoint dog tag charms
  2. Unique refrigerator magnets
  3. A special insulated shopping tote
  4. Slate cheese board
  5. Outdoor games set

Get your whimsy on. (oh and one more resource for ideas is Elle Decor with 40 great summer gift ideas)

What would you like to receive as a hostess gift (or host gift) the next time you hold a get together?
